How to Spend a Month in Slovenia Without Missing Any Work
We spent the month of October in Slovenia and didn’t miss any work!
Before I share how we did it, here are a few reasons why we chose Slovenia:
- After a busy summer traveling around Europe, we were looking for a quiet, peaceful destination.
- Slovenia was the only former Yugoslavian country we hadn’t visited.
- We heard amazing things about mountain adventures and unique cave systems in Slovenia.
Logistically, we flew to Budapest, rented a care and drove to Slovenia. Our home base was among the mountains in Eastern Slovenia. That is where we lived and worked remotely during the week. From there, we were able to explore the other parts of Slovenia on the weekends.
Here are 3 things we loved about our workation in Slovenia:
1) The People
From the moment we booked our accommodation, I could feel the Slovenian hospitality oozing.
Upon arrival, our hosts doubled down on hospitality by giving us a tour (and samples) in the wine cellar under the home.
And it only got better from there.
On one of our first days there, our hosts delivered this amazing smorgasbord of homemade, Slovenian delights. I couldn’t resist taking a picture of all of these goodies (but I forgot to include the fresh, homemade cheese that was in the fridge):
On another day, they brought over a large bowl of freshly made Ajdovi žganci, the national dish of Slovenia. It’s basically a porridge made from buckwheat and was accompanied by a barley tea. We were told that we would either love it or we would hate it – no in-between! 🤣
To top it all off, the hosts took time out of their day to build a fire in the wood-burning oven opens in the kitchen for cooking but also heats up the living room and rest of the house for days.
Once the oven was ready for cooking, we watched our host mix water and flour and knead, proof and bake us fresh flatbread topped with some Slovenian bacon spread:
In summary, the kindness and hospitality of our hosts was a testimony to the hospitality we felt throughout in Slovenia.
2) Accommodations
After traveling around Europe from May to September, we were looking for a quiet, rural stay. We were also keen on experiencing Fall foliage in the mountains.
I can’t even begin to describe how peaceful and relaxing it was to live on the side of a Slovenian mountain.
I don’t think I’ve ever slept so good!
Here are a few of our neighbors:
We sometimes worked from the upstairs balcony overlooking the valley:
And sometimes we worked from the downstairs terrace with a Western view of the mountains:
But most of the time, we worked inside from this nice big dining room table:
The house stayed nice and cozy for several days after using the wood-burning oven since the other side of the oven was in the living room, right next to the dining room and below our bedroom. We also enjoyed laying on top of this ceramic oven to rest and relax:
3) Exploring the Diverse Geography
We heard it said many times: everything in Slovenia is within a 2-hour drive and it’s totally true. While our homebase was in Eastern Slovenia, we spent a couple weekends in other parts of the country. We really enjoyed the variety of things to do in Slovenia.
Daytrip to Ljubljana
On our first weekend in Slovenia, we took a daytrip to the Slovenian capital city of Ljubljana. Here’s a pic of one of the dragons from the city’s famous Dragon Bridge:
Here’s a pic from a bridge crossing the Ljubljanica River:
Kranjska Gora
On our second weekend, we stayed in Kranjska Gora, a small ski village near the borders of Italy and Austria. Because we didn’t want to miss any work, we drove there from Makole on a Friday morning. Once we got there, we had just enough time to visit the Zelenci Nature Reserve and Lake Zelenci before eating lunch and starting our workday:
The next morning, we headed West to hike above the clouds in the Julian Alps and the Mangart Peak from the Italian side. Here’s a view near the Mangart Peak and Saddle:
Here we are at cloud-level as we were returning to our car:
The next day, we headed South out of Kranjska Gora for periodic stops to hike and soak in the views. It was a beautiful Fall day along the Sava River just outside of Kranjska Gora:
We also hiked along the Great Soča Gorge:
Closer up you can see how turquoise and clear the water is:
The Disneyland of Caves
On our third weekend in Slovenia, we headed to the Southwest region of Postojna which is riddled with caves.
We drove to Postojna on Friday morning so we could work that afternoon and have two full days of exploring the area on Saturday and Sunday.
We started our Saturday exploration by visiting the world-famous Postojna Cave:
Just up the road from that cave, we visited the Predjama Castle (ake the Castle in the Cave):
After touring this incredible castle, we took a quick drive to visit the incredible Skocjan Cave. Here’s the view from above:
And here’s the view as you’re leaving Skocjan Cave (they don’t allow photography inside the cave):
On Sunday, we hopped over to Trieste, Italy for cappuccino and a croissant before visiting Grotta Gigante just inside the border of Italy.
It was a beautiful Fall morning in Trieste:
And here’s a pic from inside Italy’s Grotta Gigante:
Conclusion
On our last weekend in Slovenia, we drove back to Budapest, returned our rental car and flew back to the US.
Again, we structure our time such that we work synchronously with Eastern Time in the US Monday through Friday and use all our non-working time to relax, explore and enjoy the local desitnation.
All in all, Slovenia was an excellent destination for living and working remotely!
And the best part?
We got to spend an entire month in Slovenia without missing any work!
